Game Day: Canadiens Host the Sabres Tonight in a Quick Rematch, While the Alouettes Visit Regina This Afternoon

Clear your Saturday, Montreal: it’s a sports doubleheader. The Alouettes kick things off in Regina this afternoon, and the Canadiens host the Buffalo Sabres at the Bell Centre tonight at 7 p.m.

Habs vs. Sabres: Round Two in Five Days

The Canadiens (3-3-1) are coming off a 5-4 loss in Washington on Wednesday, a game we broke down in our Habs Watch. Tonight’s opponent should feel familiar: Montreal beat Buffalo 4-3 in a shootout on Tuesday, with Zachary Bolduc scoring the deciding shootout goal for the second straight game.

The Sabres have been hot since. On Thursday they won 5-4 in overtime in Toronto, improving to 4-3-1.

Three Things to Watch

  • The crease. Jakub Dobes and Jacob Fowler have split the work so far, with Fowler starring in back-to-back shootout wins. Who gets the start tonight is worth watching.
  • Josh Anderson’s hot streak. Two goals in Washington and one of the team’s top performers through the first seven games.
  • Goals against. Montreal has allowed five or more goals four times already. A tight defensive game would be a welcome sight at the Bell Centre.

The standings stakes are real, too: the Habs are 7th in the Atlantic Division as of this morning, in a tight pack where one good week can change everything. After tonight, they host San Jose on Tuesday before a four-game road trip.

Alouettes: First Place, Nothing to Lose

The Als have already locked up first place in the East Division, and they did it in style, finishing a perfect 9-0 at Percival Molson Stadium after a 44-24 win over Saskatchewan on Monday, as we covered in Perfect at Home. Today at 3 p.m. ET they face the Riders again, this time in Regina.

Quarterback Davis Alexander was named one of the CFL’s top performers of the week for the sixth time this season after throwing for 403 yards and a career-high five touchdowns on Monday. He leads the league in passing yards and touchdown passes, according to the Alouettes. With first place secured, keep an eye on how much the starters play as the team gets ready for the playoffs.
