Halloween falls on Saturday this year, and you are going to need something better than a bag of mini chocolate bars. Montreal pastry shops have rolled out seasonal sweets for the occasion. Here are the best Halloween treats in Montreal for the weekend, plus a few fall classics if you would rather skip the spooky theme. One tip: limited editions sell out, so call ahead or go early on Friday.
Best Halloween treats in Montreal pastry shops
Chez Potier (Wellington Street)
This gourmet pastry shop at 630 Wellington Street, near Griffintown, lists a Halloween collection chocolate box on its online shop, alongside cannelés bordelais, flan parisien and boxes of croissants and chocolatines. Online orders must be placed the day before pick-up, so plan ahead for Saturday.
Missed the cut-off? Chez Potier says most products are also sold in store, open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays and to 5 p.m. weekends.
Un Instant en Provence (Saint-Henri)
At 4835 Notre-Dame Street West, this Provençal bakery is known for its tarte tropézienne, and this month it is also offering an Entremet d’Halloween, a limited-quantity Halloween cake. Not into theme desserts? Its other cakes to share include a mille-feuille, a Madagascar vanilla flan and a lemon meringue tart. It is open 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.
Fous Desserts (Plateau-Mont-Royal)
The Franco-Japanese pâtisserie at 809 Laurier Avenue East has announced on its website that its Halloween chocolates are now available in store. While you are there, grab a croissant or chocolatine, or try the almond croissant with hojicha and apricot if it hasn’t sold out. Closed Mondays.
Fous Desserts’ hours are 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, so Saturday morning works as plan B.
Les Madeleines d’Émilie (Plateau-Mont-Royal)
Facing Jeanne-Mance Park at 129 Mont-Royal Avenue West, this shop is all about madeleines, sweet and savoury. Its social feed says Halloween madeleines are at the shop during the last week of October, and are also sold at OASIS Immersion on Oct. 29 and 30, during the Le Veilleur horror show. Look out for the fall pumpkin madeleine too.
The fall menu also lists a pear, chocolate and almond madeleine. Its site lists hours of 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday to Sunday.
