There’s a moment every October when Montreal collectively decides it’s soup season. And no soup does comfort quite like a French onion soup gratinée: caramelized onions, a rich broth, toasted bread and a molten lid of cheese. Here are 8 great places to get one, based on Tastet’s updated list (refreshed October 10, 2026).
1. Restaurant Gus (Petite-Patrie)
38 Beaubien St. E. Chef David Ferguson’s Quebec cooking with a Southern twist produces an onion soup 2.0: made with red beer, with smoked pork shank, avocado, homemade croutons and cheddar.
2. Le Molière Brasserie Française (Quartier Latin)
1560 Saint-Denis St. A classic French brasserie where the domed onion soup is a menu standout.
3. Mignon Steak Frites (Little Burgundy)
2523 Notre-Dame St. W. A steak-frites bistro whose onion soup gratinée comes topped with crostini, aged cheddar and porcini oil.
4. Maison Baultberri (Downtown)
1275 Berri St. A café by Laurent Dagenais and the Empire team, set in the former Archambault space at Sainte-Catherine and Berri. Tastet calls the onion soup the real star of the menu.
5. Brasserie Bernard (Outremont)
1249 Bernard Ave. A Parisian-style brasserie open since 2013, with an onion soup gratinéed with Louis d’Or and gruyère.
6. Holder (Old Montreal)
407 McGill St. A lively European brasserie, great for business lunches or dinners with friends, starting with a comforting onion soup.
7. Duc de Lorraine (Côte-des-Neiges)
5002 Côte-des-Neiges Rd. Best known for its pastries since 1952, it also serves French bistro classics, including an onion soup on the evening menu gratinéed with Swiss cheese and cheddar.
8. Au Pied de Cochon (Plateau)
536 Duluth Ave. E. The decadent Montreal icon brings back its onion soup starting in mid-October, made with the broth used to cook the house charcuterie and gratinéed with gruyère and emmental. Perfect timing.
Make It a Night
Pair your soup with a stroll: Holder is in the heart of Old Montreal, and Le Molière is steps from the Quartier Latin. Or, if you’re in the mood for noodles instead, there’s still time to catch Ramen Ramen Fes before it wraps up on October 25.
