A good cut of beef, a pile of hot, golden fries, maybe a glass of red: steak frites is the kind of comfort that never goes out of style, and Montreal does it beautifully. Here are 12 spots to try, based on Tastet’s steak frites list.
The Institutions
1. L’Express (Plateau)
3927 Saint-Denis St. Open since December 1980, this Saint-Denis icon serves an impeccably grilled hanger steak topped with shallot butter on a bed of fries. Tastet notes it sold 17,000 portions of it in 2018 alone.
2. Leméac (Outremont)
1045 Laurier Ave. W. An 8-ounce grilled hanger steak with fries and maître d’hôtel butter, in an elegant, classic brasserie setting.
3. Brasserie Bernard (Outremont)
1249 Bernard Ave. AAA Angus beef with peppercorn sauce. (Their onion soup made our soup list too.)
Neighbourhood Favourites
4. Bistrot à Franky (Mile End)
112 Bernard St. W. A standout filet au poivre: beef dry-aged on the bone for two weeks, with a cream sauce cultured in-house and five peppercorns. A special-occasion plate.
5. Tuck Shop (Saint-Henri)
4662 Notre-Dame St. W. One of Tastet’s favourites in town: currently a hanger steak with fries and peppercorn sauce, though the cut changes with the menu.
6. Au Petit Extra (Centre-Sud)
1690 Ontario St. E. An elegant little French bistro steps from the Cabaret Lion d’Or, with AAA hanger steak, maître d’hôtel butter, fries and salad.
7. Bouillon Albert (Plateau)
4177 Saint-Denis St. Affordable French classics in the spirit of Parisian bouillons since fall 2024, including hanger steak with fries and Café de Paris sauce.
8. Mignon Steak Frites (Little Burgundy)
