Today is the day: Quebec’s new Parti Québécois government is set to announce its cabinet, according to The Canadian Press. It’s the moment we find out who will run the files that matter most to Montrealers, from health care to transit to housing.
How We Got Here
- Oct. 5: The PQ wins a minority government with 59 seats. The Liberals more than double their seat count to 40 and remain the Official Opposition.
- Oct. 15: PQ MNAs, including Premier-designate Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, are sworn in (see our coverage).
- Oct. 19: Liberal MNAs are sworn in, after leader Charles Milliard named André Fortin parliamentary leader.
- Oct. 20: Québec Solidaire’s MNAs take their oaths.
- Oct. 21 (today): The PQ cabinet is announced.
- Oct. 22: Conservative MNAs are sworn in.
What to Watch For
Montreal’s voice at the table
How many ministers come from the Montreal area, and who gets files with a big local impact: transport, housing, health and the metropolis.
Working with a minority
With 59 seats, the PQ needs support from at least one other party to pass legislation, so cabinet choices may signal how it plans to work with the opposition.
Recounts
Close races are still being settled: a judicial recount is under way in Vachon, where the Liberal candidate won by ten votes.
